AJD Migrates for 18th time

This evening a group of us witnessed the 18th migration of godwit/kuaka AJD. It was an emotional farewell for many of us who for the last six evenings have been at the estuary waiting for him to leave, but only tonight was the wind favourable. A group of five left together, two males and three females. The picture below was taken six minutes before they left, showing AJD with a female companion. We watched them go down the river, then rise high as they disappeared out to sea. Their next stop is the Yellow Sea, a 10,500 km journey. So, now we await their return in six months' time.
