Nankeen night herons - mid-winter

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

Over the last several weeks we have had great views of Nankeen night herons at Upokongaro, as they sun themselves during the afternoon, especially after a frost the previous night. We have counted up to 20 birds leaving their daytime roost at dusk, the highest count we have ever had.

Further, we have found on several occasions birds down on the stream behind the cafe, giving us great photo opportunities. Birders from all over still turn up to see these rare birds, and most days, we are able to help them find some.
