NEWS FLASH - Godwit AJD is back on the Whanganui Estuary

A brief note to say that our Godwit AJD is back, right here is Whanganui. He now begins his 18th migration circuit, that we have recorded.

Jane & I were at the river last evening, and found 45 godwits, mostly juveniles. It was blowing a gale, and was difficult viewing, so I believe AJD was likely there. If so, this is exactly the same day that he turned up late, in 2021, as recorded on the last page of my book.

I returned at 8 am this morning, just after high tide, and found 51 godwits, resting just upstream from the Sailing Club. In my binoculars I thought I could see a white spot at the top of a godwit’s leg, so took a picture that revealed what looked like a flag. I got closer and this bird hopped away on one leg, to the back of the bunch. And yes, it was AJD. What a thrilling moment. It was a perfect morning, clear sky, no wind, and the encounter I’ve been waiting for. If he does what he did in 2021, he will not go to Foxton at all but stay here for the summer. He is looking well, and the flag looks no different from last year.

Thank you all for your interest in this bird, he has a world-wide following, yet he is completely unaware of his fame.
