A part of wildlife photography is skill and experience; another part is having the luck of being in the right place at the right time. This latter happened to me last week when on arrival at the lake of our local Bason Botanic Gardens the scene demanded I get my camera into immediate action. A black shag was attempting to swallow a fish that appeared far too large for it. A lot of the struggle was happening underwater, with the shag occasionally lifting the fish high up in the air. After 10 minutes the fish got away, and the shag continued its search for a meal. Lo and behold, 15 minutes later it caught the same fish, or another the same, and after 10 minutes fighting he managed this time to get it down the hatch! What a fight to witness, an event I managed to photograph from beginning to end.
