I saw in the news a report of a white harrier in the Waitaki Valley, so I decided to go and look for it. I got details of the general area it has been seen in but had no guarantee of finding it. Luck was on my side, as driving along the road we spotted the bird flying along the hillside several hundred metres away. Some photos from the rear were taken, but these were far from satisfactory. The harrier landed on a fence post, about half a km away, and we decided we would wait to see where it would fly next. Well, two hours went by, and the bird did not move. So, what else to do but to cross some rough land and try to get closer. I got within 100 metres, approaching it behind some trees, before it flew, but I had about three seconds to get photos, so very glad my camera worked and focused quickly. So, a happy boy that day.
